The Public Servants Association (PSA) has called for an urgent summit to evaluate the state of KwaZulu-Natal’s education sector.
This comes as over 11,000 teachers in the province are on the cusp of losing their jobs due to the Treasury’s budget reductions.
The revelation comes after the Western Cape department’s announcement that it will cut about 2,400 teachers in January.
The PSA said it is alarmed by the government’s inability to protect critical workers who are necessary to sustain the quality of education.
The union said cutting teacher posts will worsen the strain on educators who are already working in overcrowded classrooms, particularly in underprivileged schools.
It says the proposed summit will bring all sector stakeholders under one roof to assess the ongoing crisis and find strategies to manage educator-learner ratios to ensure effective teaching and learning environments.
