Govt offers 11.7% increase to lowest-paid public servants

The government is offering the lowest-earning public servants an effective 11.7-percent increase.

It’s offering a 1.5-percent salary increase and a R1,000 cash allowance.

The highest-earning public servants would receive an effective 3.1-percent increase.

The offer comes as unions threaten to strike.

Public servants and their unions are demanding a 7-percent pay increase.

The Public Servants Association has 235,000 members, including nurses, teachers, and police officers.

Its negotiations with the government have been deadlocked for months.

Unions will take the latest offer to their members for consideration.
