Provinces will just have to wait for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) turnaround before control of the passenger rail system could be handed over to metros.
The Western Cape government announced recently, that they would take over the running on the metro rail system.
However, Minister of Transport Blade Nzimande says they’re not ready.
“I doubt that they are in a position to run it,” said Nzimande.
“We are having big issues implementing the bus rapid transport in Cape Town. It is a smaller operation but it has big challenges. We are working with provinces, municipalities, the Cape Town metro, we have been working together in order to turn around the system.”
Nzimande said he is hopeful a newly established task team will help the embattled Prasa.
The agency is expected to reach a turnaround phase in the next 12 months and reach its growth and expansion phase within the next 36 months.
