GOTG: Evacuations of South Africans from Sudan proceeding smoothly

The Gift of the Givers said that there had been progress in evacuating South Africans and others from various countries from war-torn Sudan.

The organization’s Imtiaz Sooliman said that the first group comprising 38 South Africans who exited Khartoum were now in Egypt and were being attended to by diplomatic staff.

They are being followed by a second group of 11 South Africans who have been given permission to leave Port Sudan via a ferry to Jeddah.

This follows the news that a third bus had reached the Ashkate border in Wadi Halfa carrying South Africans and passengers from various nationalities.

These include nationals from the US, Nigeria and Zimbabwe among others.

Sooliman said that the evacuations were proceeding smoothly.

“All the documentation of the South Africans and the nationals of other countries, including USA, Britain, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, all were on the bus with us, including a few Sudanese and Palestinians. The documentation has to be redirected to that border, which the embassies are doing right now.”

An SANDF plane will be used to ferry home South Africans evacuated from conflict-ridden Sudan.

Sudan has been hit by conflict between two warring sides, who are battling for control of the country, with hundreds killed.
