President Cyril Ramaphosa to face criticism over load shedding during SONA debate

The Joint debate on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) is expected to start in the City Hall in Cape Town this morning. Members of Parliament from the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces are expected to participate in the debate, which will take place over two days.

Ramaphosa will reply to the debate on Thursday. The debate is expected to reflect on some of the successes and failures of government in the last 30 years. When he delivered his SONA last Thursday, Ramaphosa confidently told the nation how the end of load shedding is finally within reach.

However, he is expected to face fierce criticism during the debate, as the rolling blackouts moved from stage two on SONA day to stages four and six in the following days, instead of showing signs of ending. Today, South Africa is on stage three of the rolling blackouts, moving to stage four later in the afternoon.
