President Cyril Ramaphosa commemorated the sinking of the SS Mendi in 1917. Armed Forces Day remembers the 616 black South African troops who were killed in the tragedy.
The steamship collided with another ship, the SS Darro on its way to France. The men were going to assist the British government during World War One.
It remains South Africa’s greatest maritime disaster to date.
