President Cyril Ramaphosa defends size of cabinet

President Cyril Ramaphosa is defending the size of his cabinet. He says the size of government should be guided by the country’s needs and not be a head-counting exercise.

Ramaphosa argues the number of ministries was reduced from 34 to 28 in 2019. The executive has now been increased by two to 30 Ministers. The president says the new Electricity Minister will only remain until the energy crisis has been resolved.

He also says the Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Ministry is necessary to ensure proper implementation. Government has been criticised for the number of people in cabinet and the numerous Deputy Ministers.
