Former Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan will be cremated in Durban on Thursday.
His family and friends will gather for his funeral service at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in the morning.
Gordhan died at a Johannesburg hospital almost a week ago, following a short battle with cancer.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that the legacy of Gordhan will be honoured with a special official funeral.
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Neeshan Bolton said a private cremation would follow Gordhan’s funeral service.
“Across the lengths and breadths of South Africa, you don’t need permission to celebrate PG’s [Gordhan] life. Do it in the way that you think is befitting because I think his life is worth celebrating across the lengths and breadths of this country, and not just in the formal events.”
His children and close friends have described him as a hero of the liberation struggle and an advocate for clean and credible governance.
Nevertheless, some continue to express criticism of the former minister, with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) declaring it feels no grief over his passing.
