Pravin Gordhan defends government’s involvement in Eskom

There’s no political interference in the running of Eskom. In a written reply to a parliamentary question, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has defended the government’s involvement in the running of the power utility as within its rights.

It comes on the back of claims made by the CEO of Business Leadership South Africa Busisiwe Mavuso last year, that the board had been hindered from decision-making.

In a written reply to a question from the EFF on the matter, Gordhan says government as a 100-percent shareholder, has a range of rights relating to the governance of SOEs.

This includes initiating processes to assist the board in diagnosing a problem and suggesting solutions.

Gordhan says the power utility is also expected to meet performance targets.

This includes plant performance, financial targets and the implementation of turnaround plans.
