More sabotage happening at Eskom: Minister Pravin Gordhan

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has emphasised issues around theft and sabotage at Eskom are causing more strain on the country’s power infrastructure. Gordhan announced that the latest sabotage incident occurred at the Hendrina Power Station in the past 24 hours.

He says a lot of these incidents are coming from within Eskom. Meanwhile, Eskom has laid criminal charges with the police following vandalism at the Tutuka power station near Standerton.

The utility’s spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantshantsha, says the discovery of a warming valve cable cut with a grinder is proof of sabotage from within the company.

He says over R100-million worth of oil is stolen from this station every month on average and these factors play a major role in the utility’s overall capacity to keep the light on.
