Prasa resumes train services in Mabopane

Passenger rail agency, Prasa has started restoring some rail services, despite outdated technology and destroyed infrastructure.
Nine months after services were suspended on the Pretoria to Mabopane corridor, the line has been re-opened.
But the station and the infrastructure along the railway to the capital have been vandalized and stripped for scrap.
Prasa CEO, Nosipho Damasane says vandalism has been the worst in Gauteng during the COVID-19 period.
“Gauteng has been the most hit in terms of vandalism, especially during the Covid period.
So effectively in the Gauteng area, we only have one power line, which is Vereeniging, which we opened last week. Other than that we are running Gauteng with Diesel until we get substations revitalised and we will bring back the blue trains on certain corridors,” she said.
She says plans are underway to fix the broken system.
“We are forging ahead under difficult circumstances but we want these services back. Because we know it’s important for our country and economy, and for our people who are passengers,” she said.
Commuters who were hard hit by the lockdown have welcomed the development.
