Durban north residents warned of potential toxins

Residents of the northern suburbs of Durban should leave the area if they can.

A chemical fire is burning at a nearby chemical plant in Cornubia.

This after arsonists and looters set fire to it last week during the recent unrest.

Professor Rajen Naidoo from UKZN says that if residents are unable to relocate they should stay indoors to avoid inhaling damaging fumes.

“What we would like to advise at this stage because we do not know the details because we don’t know of the exact chemicals of which these communities have been exposed to, our advise is as far as possible to stay indoors,” he said.

“You are going to experience some irritation particularly of the eyes, nose, and throat, if you are otherwise well it should not be a substantial problem.”
