Popular Gqom Duo accused of stealing

The Durban based popular gqom sensation duo Bello no Gallo of the smash hit song ‘khula’ are called out of stealing.  The duo is accused of stealing their popular hit song from another group of unpopular musicians. This comes after another musicians, The Elevators and Niseni have made it known that the duo is reaping the fruits of their labour.

The duo who have made success overnight consists of Sabelo Mkhize, known as Bello, and Zakhele Mthethwa, also known as Gallo. Both born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, started making music back in 2014 when they were still in school. The raving reviews and reception for their smash hit may be fleeting because another group of musicians have came forward claiming the song to be theirs.

The smash hit ‘khula’ was also on the top ten songs gunning for the song of the year last year on Ukhozi FM. The song have gone to be the national anthem across the country since it was released and fans started creating memes and video skits re-enacting the dance moves on the video.

The Elevators, which includes of Nkululeko Ngcobo and Sphamandla Shongwe, have formally written a letter to a collecting society, conveying their outrage and asking for any royalties paid towards Bello no Gallo to be halted until the matter is finally resolved. The Elevators believes that Bello no Gallo are benefiting from their hard-work that they poured their hearts and souls in. The Elevators are also planning on taking the legal route if the matter is not speedily resolved.

In a letter by The Elevators and Niseni’s representative, Vusi Leeuw Consulting, the request is that the South African Music Performance Rights Organization (Samphra) should halt any royalties to be paid to Open Mic, Ziyenzeka Entertainment record labels and Bello no Gallo.
