The Citizen is seeking a political journalist / investigative reporter to join its digital team to cover politics in the daily news cycle and for quality content behind a paywall. The suitable candidate will be part of a vibrant, forward-thinking team. It is the ideal opportunity for an energetic and self-motivated person with a strong interest in and insight into politics, as well as strong writing ability. The ideal candidate will report directly to the Digital News Editor while also working closely with the print editorial team.
Responsibilities
To be aware of all the latest political news and developments.
To follow politicians closely and to have a network of contacts in the political space.
Writing, editing and processing content in line with the publication’s style.
Uploading and editing relevant photos and videos.
Promotion of own content on social media platforms in line with the company’s digital strategy.
Work with the various editorial teams to ensure lively, interesting pieces that can be used both online and in the printed newspaper.
Monitoring of wires, social media and competitor sites for breaking and/or relevant news. Can write both original and aggregated content, or a combination of both, with a strong focus on original articles of high enough quality that people will pay for them.
Requirements:
Relevant degree in journalism or related fields.
Experience in political and investigative reporting.
Proven experience in a similar position.
Excellent command of the English language.
Experience in the digital environment.
Strong computer skills and a good knowledge of the web, multimedia and social media.
Hunger to learn and develop quickly in a deadline driven environment.
Can work independently or as a member of a team.
Can take direction well.
Display an interest in digital media technology and innovation.
Work accurately with speed and focus.
Willing to work on weekends and evenings if required.
Ability to subedit and write clean, grammatically correct copy.
Advantages
Basic knowledge of the mechanics of online news.
Video editing skills.
Preference will be given to individuals who will add to the diversity of the organization.
