Nicholas Nyati: DA must seek ways to grow youth political participation in SA

Democratic Alliance (DA) youth federal leader, Nicholas Nyati said the party needs to adopt resolutions that will increase youth participation in politics.

The party’s federal congress is underway in Midrand this weekend, where it is expected to elect new leaders and draft new policy resolutions.

Nyati said he was concerned about the youth’s lack of interest in politics, and said the DA needed to ensure young people feel represented.

The party’s youth structures have joined calls to have young people occupy top offices within the party, and for them to play a prominent role in key decision-making.

Nyati, who is part of the DA’s federal executive (FedEx) – which is the DA’s decision-making body, said young voters need to feel represented in order to grow their interest in politics.

However, he noted that the party needs to improve its youth engagement policies.

“We are also proposing that 2024 from the DA’s perspective must be defined as the year of the youth. These elections are no longer about our grandparents or Mandela.”

During the federal congress, the delegates voted for the party’s federal council to include more young people in key decision and policy-making structures.
