9 suspects arrested in series of police operations in Benoni

The Benoni Flying Squad in Gauteng has made strides in crime prevention, arresting nine suspects and recovering a hijacked vehicle during a series of operations from Wednesday, October 9 to Sunday, October 13.

Three suspects, aged between 31 and 38, were arrested at High road, Brakpan, Kaalfontein Extension 1 and Extension12, Ivory Park for possession of illegal drugs, including crystal methamphetamine, mandrax, and nyaope.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Warrant officer Grant Giblin said on Saturday, police received a tip-off about a vehicle matching the description of one linked to recent thefts.

Officers, along with Mamba Security and the Community Policing Forum, cornered a silver Haval with four suspects at the intersection of Main and Homestead streets in Edenvale.

Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the vehicle had been reported hijacked in Protea, Soweto, last month. The suspects, aged 32 to 49, were arrested at the scene.

Police seized two vehicle signal jammers, multiple vehicle computer boxes, and an assortment of burglary tools from the car.

The suspects are now in custody at Edenvale police station.

In separate incidents, a 37-year-old man was arrested early on Sunday morning for driving under the influence on the Tom Jones off-ramp of the N12, while a 40-year-old was detained later that day for allegedly stealing wine from a liquor store in Voortrekker Street, Brakpan.

Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will face various charges in local magistrate’s courts, including possession of drugs, possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of vehicle-breaking implements, driving under the influence, and shoplifting.
