The police were combing the area shortly after a cash-in-transit robbery took place at Brandwag Shopping Centre.

Tenants at the block of flats where the man was arrested told Daily Sun the man was visiting his children when the cops pounced on him.

“His children live here with their mum. I was shocked when I saw armed cops approaching his car. The child kept begging the cops to release his father,” said one tenant.

Police spokesman Brigadier Vish Naidoo said security guards were taking money bags to the truck when they were ambushed by a group of armed robbers at the busy centre.

“An undisclosed sum of money was taken. No injuries were reported and no arrests had been made. “We urge anyone with information to contact their nearest police station,” said Naidoo.

He said they were not ruling out the possibility that the man could be linked to the robbery. Provincial police commissioner Major-General Moeketsi Sempe said: “The suspect was arrested for possession of illegal firearms.

“He will appear in court soon.”
