Police Minister Mchunu dismisses suggestions police delayed in tackling illegal Mpumalanga military camp

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has dismissed suggestions that police were delayed in pouncing on an illegal military training camp in Mpumalanga.

Mchunu said police started investigating the matter immediately when they learnt of the possible operations at the White River farm.

The minister was briefing the media following a visit to the site with other officials on Saturday.

On Friday, police arrested 95 Libyan nationals after uncovering the camp.

The Libyan nationals entered South Africa through Tunisia using fraudulent documentation.

Mchunu said an investigation of this nature is a complex one.

“An investigation of this nature can take a year, it can take four months, it can take whatever period necessitated by the need to come to the facts before you act and that’s exactly what happened here.”
