MOKOPANE — Police in the Waterberg District of Limpopo have launched an urgent manhunt for a group of armed suspects following a brazen attack on a passenger bus along the N1 freeway that left two people dead and several others traumatised. The incident, which occurred late Wednesday evening, has sparked shock and outrage across communities and raised questions about passenger safety on major transport routes.
Dramatic images circulating on social media showed harrowing scenes from the aftermath: a young child clinging to the lifeless body of her mother, covered in blood, seated inside the bus, while another photo depicted the body of the male victim lying nearby. Emergency medical services swarmed the scene, with the bus surrounded by flashing lights and first responders rushing to assist the injured passengers.
According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, provincial police spokesperson, the incident unfolded shortly before 10 pm on Wednesday night, approximately eight kilometres before the Nyl Plaza tollgate.
“The complainant is a 42‑year‑old bus driver from Zimbabwe who had departed from the Power House bus station in Johannesburg,” Colonel Ledwaba explained. “He was driving a Volvo 60‑seater bus carrying 54 passengers, having picked up travellers at various points, including Midrand and Pretoria, en route to Zimbabwe.”
Witness reports suggest the trip was proceeding normally until the bus reached a remote stretch of the N1 freeway. There, two male passengers seated at the rear allegedly produced firearms and began threatening other travellers.
One passenger, described as a man in his early 30s whose identity is yet to be confirmed, reportedly attempted to wrestle one of the weapons from the suspects. Several other passengers also intervened.
“During the struggle, the suspects fired multiple shots inside the bus, fatally wounding the 30‑year‑old male passenger and an unidentified woman, estimated to be about 25 years old,” Ledwaba confirmed.
Following the shooting, the assailants reportedly robbed passengers of cash and mobile phones before fleeing the scene.
Police Launch Massive Manhunt After Armed Attack on Mokopane Bus Leaves Two Dead
Police investigations revealed that an unidentified vehicle — whose make, model, and registration are unknown — had been trailing the bus and stopped behind it after the shooting. The attackers then abandoned the bus, jumped into the vehicle, and sped away.
No arrests have been made so far. Police have opened cases of two counts of murder and armed robbery and are treating the incident with the highest priority.
Limpopo’s provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed deep concern over the incident. “This attack is a shocking act of violence that has left innocent lives lost and many traumatised,” said Hadebe. “I have directed the establishment of a dedicated task team to work tirelessly to apprehend the suspects and bring them to justice.”
Police have called on members of the public to assist with information that could lead to arrests. Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact Sergeant Matsipi Makwela on 076 786 1447, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, approach the nearest police station, or use the MySAPS App.
The incident has reignited broader fears about passenger safety, particularly on long‑distance routes linking major cities and neighbouring countries. For many travellers, bus transport is an essential and affordable means of travel, but recent attacks have heightened concerns about security along key corridors such as the N1.
In 2023, similar incidents in South Africa underscored the growing risk. Police in North West Province intensified patrols after two separate armed robberies targeted buses ferrying foreign tourists. One such attack occurred on December 2, 2023, on the R556 road near Mooinooi, when a Toyota Quantum carrying eleven tourists — six Germans, two Polish, two British, and one American — was stopped and robbed at gunpoint by four armed men.
“These incidents are a growing concern for both commuters and the tourism industry,” said Colonel Adéle Myburgh, provincial police spokesperson at the time.
For those aboard the bus in Mokopane on Wednesday night, the attack was a terrifying ordeal. Survivors described scenes of chaos, with passengers screaming and ducking for cover as shots rang out. The two victims died at the scene before emergency teams arrived. Other passengers sustained injuries, though police say their conditions are stable.
The tragedy has left families in mourning, and the haunting image of a young child clutching her mother’s lifeless body has become a stark reminder of the human cost of violent crime.
Authorities in Limpopo have pledged to intensify highway policing and increase surveillance on key transport routes. However, police stress that public vigilance will be critical in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“This attack was not random — it was a coordinated act of armed robbery,” said Colonel Ledwaba. “Our investigation is ongoing, and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the attack or has information about the suspects or the vehicle to come forward.”
As the manhunt continues, the Mokopane incident stands as a tragic reminder of the need for greater security measures along South Africa’s transport networks, as well as urgent action to ensure the safety of everyday commuters.
