Police conduct lockdown enforcement operation in Soweto
Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko says some retailers are putting people’s lives are at risk. It comes after officials were forced to shut down a butcher at the Bara taxi rank. The store was allegedly selling expired food and it’s also believed rotten meat was stored on the premises. The license has now been revoked.
Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela led the COVID-19 joint operations in Soweto on Thursday. Officials conducted raids following tip-offs from the community that people are selling fake essential services permits to traders.
“Nobody is allowed to produce permits except authorised state institutions and organisations,” said Gauteng Department of Community Safety spokesperson Ofentse Morwane.
“Anyone found in possession of fraudulent documents during this lockdown period and beyond will face the full might of law.”

Mawela said the army would be distributing pamphlets to the community to educate them on the importance of adhering to lockdown regulations.
