Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee says it will continue to monitor developments around the arrest of 95 Libyan nationals, who were in the country allegedly for military training.
The training was done by a private security company on a farm outside White River in Mpumalanga. The Libyans were also arrested for contravening the Immigration Act. Some experts have pointed out the vulnerability of the security in the country.
The discovery of the alleged illegal military training camp near White River took the country by surprise. The area was raided by police and Home Affairs officials last week. A Defense and Security Analyst says it is strange that government was unaware of the training that took place.
“If our intel agencies were not aware of it then we are so much vulnerable and probably abused by bad actors than expected. Imagine what else is going on in South Africa contrary to our best interest without the authorities being aware of it,” says Kobus Marais, Defense and Security Analyst.
Marais believes this would not have happened in Libya, saying there are many unanswered questions.
“Training by South African company in Libya would have been against the UN regulation and a big diplomatic embarrassment to South Africa. A legitimate South African training company complying with all the relevant requirements with excellent facilities and a track record was clearly seen as a safer option where special forces training was provided under the disguise as a military type of security training.
The questions remain how students travel to South Africa and under what type of visas they enter South Africa. What screening and vetting was done when they applied for their documents, both in Libya and in South Africa. Surely such a group application must have raised the red flags. Were there any collusions if anything happened within the legislative framework requirements.
