62-year-old man granted bail after his 2 pitbulls maul woman to death

The man whose two dogs mauled a 43-year-old woman to death has been granted R5 000 bail.

Nchabeleng Charles Masebe, who was has been charged with culpable homicide, appeared in the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Thursday.

The 62-year-old was arrested and charged after his dogs killed Melitta Sekole on 23 December.

Sekole was walking to her workplace when she was attacked by two dogs, believed to be pit bulls, in Vivo of the Blouberg Local Municipality.

The woman was later transferred to a provincial hospital in Polokwane where she succumbed to the injuries on 27 December.

Bail conditions

The conditions of Masebe’s bail include that he would have to report to the Mara Police Station every Friday and hand over his travel documents, a local publication has reported.

State prosecutor Karabo Tefo also corroborated that Masebe’s dogs would be put down.

Masebe’s defence lawyer Mando Matshisevhe wrote a letter to the SPCA in Louis Trichardt giving permission for the dogs to be put to death.

Matshisevhe confirmed this, adding that his client would adhere to bail conditions.

“I have drafted a letter to authorize the SPCA to put the dogs down,” said Matshisevhe.

‘It will not bring our sister back’

The younger brother of the deceased, Thuso Phala, said the family was disheartened that Masebe was granted bail.

“It is very sad because we have lost a parent and a sister to us,” said Thuso.

“We know that there is nothing we can do to bring her back, even if they put him in jail, it will not bring our sister back. But it would at least wipe our tears,” he added.

The case was postponed to 26 April 2023.
