Section27 calls for eradication of pit toilets

The government has for years been promising to get rid of pit toilets at schools, but that promise is yet to be met.

It has been nearly a decade since the shocking death of five-year-old Michael Komape who drowned after falling into a pit toilet at his school in Limpopo in 2014.

In 2021, a court ordered the Limpopo education department to provide a list of schools with pit toilets, as well as plans to eradicate these.

The department has until the end of March to do so.

Section27 and the Centre for Child Law have created an online tool to track accountability in this regard.

“It is demoralising when you have to take the government to court repeatedly,” says Section27 programme HOD, Faranaaz Veriava.

“You have a good court order but have to return to court for compliance,” she adds.

Veriava says that they are not happy with the progress.
