Pirates coach Joseph Makhanya to work on his players mental strength

Orlando Pirates coach Joseph Makhanya says he will work much more on the mental side of his players than the physical as they try to snap their three-match winless run in the DStv Diski Challenge and get the Buccaneers’ ship back on track.

Pirates’ performance of late has left a lot to be desired. In their last three matches, they lost twice 2-1 to Cape Town Spurs, 2-0 to Kaizer Chiefs and played to a goalless draw against TS Galaxy.

These results saw them dropping from the top of the table and they are currently eight points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

“These young kids become a bit dejected, especially after losing matches they know they should have gotten something out of. It was a bit of a setback (to lose to Spurs, draw with TS Galaxy and losing the Soweto derby) but we will try and fine-tune their mental aspect again which becomes a little bit difficult,” stated hopeful Makhanya.

The former Pirates player remains optimistic that they can still chase Sundowns and try to clinch the title. There are still 21 points to play for, I believe that we will turn the corner.”

He also admitted that it is a concern that his side are struggling to find the back of the net lately.“It is a worrying factor now that we are conceding goals and not scoring. We have been conceding and struggling to catch up. We need to start winning matches as quickly as possible.”

On Saturday, Pirates travel to Isak Steyl Stadium where they will play against Sekhukhune United at 10am. They need a victory at all costs as another defeat or draw will be a huge blow to their title aspirations.

This is the third season in a row that Pirates started the season on a positive note, however, they seem to struggle when it matters the most.
