Pikitup to deploy workers over weekend to clear trash piles in Joburg

Pikitup says its employees will work throughout the weekend to clear accumulated trash in parts of Johannesburg.

Heaps of garbage have covered parts of the city over the last two weeks due to a strike by casual workers.

The workers – whose contracts are due to expire soon – are demanding permanent jobs from Pikitup.

The waste collection company says 11 out of 12 depots are now fully operational.

“Pikitup’s waste collection services saw significant improvement, with the opening of more depots to serve the residents of the City of Johannesburg. The company’s waste collection efforts had been severely disrupted by an ongoing casual workers’ strike, making it difficult to service the city’s residents,” said Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi.
