The Kwazulu-Natal Education department says it is happy with efforts made by communities and stakeholders to ensure safety at schools.
Provincial MEC Kwazi Mshengu says schools in and around Phoenix are a priority, after tensions in the area during the unrest.
“We are quite happy with the reports that we have received so far since morning, there are no incidents that have been reported and this attests to the hard work that we have been doing in the past days,” he said.
“Basically to engage different stakeholders, to engage communities about the need to ensure that they protect our learners and protect our schools.”
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa says reports have revealed some people in Phoenix, north of Durban were racially discriminated against during the recent looting and violence.
In his weekly newsletter, he says reports show people were racially profiled at illegal roadblocks.
