Busisiwe Mkhwebane claims suspension was retaliation for Phala Phala investigation

The Phala Phala farm scandal has been placed at the centre of arguments against the suspension of Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

She’s told the Western Cape High Court that President Cyril Ramaphosa acted in retaliation for her office launching an investigation into the millions stolen from his Limpopo property in 2020.

Mkhwebane was back in court for a fourth time in two years on Monday, challenging matters related to impeachment proceedings against her.

She said the Phala Phala farm scandal is the biggest conflict of interest, and it disqualifies President Cyril Ramaphosa from suspending her.

Her legal team contends Ramaphosa has acted in retaliation for an investigation being carried out by the Public Protector’s office.

However, in an affidavit to the court, Ramaphosa says he has no objection to providing his responses in that investigation to the court.

But he’s being gagged by the acting Public Protector, to protect the integrity of that investigation.

The National Assembly Speaker says she did nothing untoward by informing the President of Parliament’s impeachment proceedings.

The case will continue in this court on Tuesday.
