The African National Congress (ANC) still believes that there is room for reconciliation with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
On Tuesday, party leaders visited the KwaPhindangene homestead of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi in Ulundi, northern KwaZulu-Natal, to pay condolences to the Buthelezi family.
Buthelezi died on Saturday after being discharged from the hospital he spent a month in.
The ANC said it hoped to someday have a working relationship with the IFP in honour of Buthelezi, who founded the party.
Despite both the ANC and IFP not sharing a cordial relationship for some time now, both parties previously said reconciliation was necessary.
During the party’s condolences visit, ANC Deputy President Paul Mashitile said Buthelezi wished to see the parties reconciling.
“The most important thing was for the IFP and the ANC to work together, not to emerge as one political party but to work together as different parties – but giving each other space.”
However, IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa told the ANC that the ball was in its court in this regard.
Mashatile added that the ANC was also ready to have the discussions that would see both parties forming a working relationship.
