Parliament concerned over quality of RDP houses

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements has expressed concern about the quality of RDP houses in the country.

The committee says the significant number of the houses have structural defects due to poor workmanship. The committee conducted visits on Human Settlements projects in the Western and Eastern Cape to assess the condition of the RDP houses and progress made on housing projects.

Portfolio committee chairperson, Machwene Semenya says in some instances, the poorly built houses need to be demolished and rebuilt. Semenya says there must be consequence management for this negligence.

“All the reports must indicate where there was default we need to be told. The consequence management. How did they apply and whether the contractor who has messed up are they still in the system? What are the processes they have applied? Because there is a process to block the contractor. If we don’t blacklist them they will get another job somewhere. It’s not enough to terminate but the officials that were supposed to monitor they need to be punished too
