President Ramaphosa satisfied with Ramokgopa as DA pushes for oversight committee

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the president was satisfied with the work being done by his newly-appointed electricity minister, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.

This is despite his powers and functions still needing to be defined.

On Thursday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is expected to table a resolution in Parliament, requesting an oversight committee for the new minister.

The Presidency said Ramokgopa has been hard at work getting to grips with the magnitude of the country’s electricity problems, and the solutions being offered through the national energy crisis committee (Necom).

“In the president’s view, the minister has added a lot of impetus in the work of Necom and will continue to do so. The president is satisfied with the work the minister has been able to do thus far. There is a sense of speed,” said Magwenya.

Magwenya said issues related to the minister’s powers and functions would be resolved soon, adding that this did not hamper Ramokgopa’s work.

“There are engagements taking place between the president and the minister as well as other ministers that have a role in the energy crisis.”

Parliament’s rules committee already rejected a proposal for an oversight committee for this portfolio.
