Correctional Services miscalculated Oscar Pistorius sentence: expert
Attorney Ulrich Roux says that the Department of Correctional Services’ calculations of Oscar Pistorius‘ sentence was incorrect. Pistorius was denied parole on Friday. Correctional Services says Pistorius did not complete the minimum detention period.
Roux says the confusion around Oscar Pistorius’s eligibility for parole is likely due to the fact that he was sentenced multiple times.
“The confusion comes in that he has been sentenced three times in this matter but the sentence that is of importance is the sentence handed down by the Supreme Court of Appeal which confirmed that he was convicted of murder and that he should serve a minimum period of imprisonment of 15 years,” said Roux. The Paralympian was first charged in 2014 with a maximum of 5 years for culpable homicide.
This was overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2015 and in 2016 he was re-sentenced to 6 years for murder. The state then once again successfully appealed this decision and in 2017 the Supreme Court of Appeal increased Pistorius’ sentence to 13 years and 5 months.
