Organ transplants drop in SA

Organ transplants in South Africa have dropped dramatically since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the Western Cape, only five surgeries have taken place over a twelve-month period.

Tygerberg Hospital’s Dr Yazied Chothia said transplant numbers have dropped dramatically in the Western Cape.

“Before COVID-19 we used to transplant about 50 including private sector but in the last calendar year it’s only been five transplants.

“Reasons are: Organ donation has been problem even before COVID. Another reason we wanted to make emergency units more accessible so had to stop organ donations.

“We also didn’t have vaccinations and we didn’t want to risk patients lives without being vaccinated first.”
