Operation Shanela nets more than 100 in Joburg CBD

Operation Shanela is out saturating the streets of Johannesburg CBD.
Led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Elias Mawela, over 100 people have been arrested, including drunk drivers and undocumented foreign nationals.
“We’ve arrested 141 undocumented persons, 10 people for drinking and driving, five for drug possession, and three shebeens have been closed,” Mawela said.
“We are all over the CBD and have saturated the area.”
Speaking on the Joburg fire, Mawela says the cause of the fire has not yet been established.
“Fire experts were deployed today [Saturday] so that they can establish the cause and that team is supported by our crime scene management team which must pick up all the exhibits in that space,” Mawela said.
“A second team was at the Diepkloof mortuary working with pathologists so that they collect whatever needs to be collected and to assist the families in terms of the process.”
