One Dead, Two Injured as Speeding Bus Crashes into Street Light Pole in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified man lost his life in the early hours of Sunday after a commercial bus crashed into a street light pole in the Idimu area of Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State. The tragic incident, which occurred around 4:00 a.m., also left two other passengers, including the driver, with serious injuries.

According to eyewitness accounts, the vehicle—a commercial bus—was heading toward Iyana Ipaja when the driver reportedly lost control while negotiating a bend near Alhaja Busstop, just a few meters away from Idimu.

Witnesses Describe High-Speed Bus Impact

One of the eyewitnesses, Wasiu, who claimed to be present at the time of the crash, told PUNCH Metro that the vehicle had been speeding excessively before the driver attempted to take a sharp turn near the bend. Wasiu said the driver appeared unaware of how tight the curve was, causing the bus to veer off course and slam into the pole on the median. The incident happened at Alhaja bus-stop, not far from Idimu. The bus was on high speed and may not have realised the bend was that sharp. The driver tried to steer through it but lost control. The bus rammed into the street light pole, and the impact was severe,” he said.

According to Wasiu, the force of the collision caused the passenger sitting beside the driver to be thrown out of the vehicle. “He hit his head on the road and died instantly. It was a very tragic sight,” he added.Another eyewitness, Demola Raji, confirmed that residents and passersby rushed to the scene immediately after the crash to assist the injured. We quickly pulled the driver and another passenger out of the vehicle. They were both in serious condition. We had to rush them to a nearby hospital before any emergency team arrived,” Raji said.

Raji, along with other residents, noted that this was not the first time an accident had occurred at the same spot. The curve at Alhaja bus-stop, they said, has been a constant risk for motorists—especially those unfamiliar with the area.

The recurring accidents at the Alhaja bend have raised safety concerns among residents and frequent road users. A resident, who gave her name as Funmilola, said the bend has been the cause of multiple crashes over the years.

There have been many accidents here. That bend is dangerous, especially at night or during early morning hours when drivers are either speeding or not fully alert. We’ve talked about reaching out to the government to see what could be done, but the reality is that without major reconstruction, drivers need to exercise caution when navigating the area,” Funmilola said.

The identity of the deceased has not been officially released, but PUNCH Metro gathered that his body was later taken away by his family for burial.

In related news, multiple fatal road accidents were reported over the weekend in other parts of Lagos and Ogun states, claiming additional lives.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed in a statement that a pedestrian died at Ojota bus-stop after being struck by a truck. The incident occurred as the victim attempted to cross the expressway instead of using the pedestrian bridge provided.

Meanwhile, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), reported a fatal crash on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway. According to him, the accident involved a head-on collision between a truck and a luxury bus.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the luxury bus was driving against traffic when he collided with the oncoming truck. Both drivers died on the spot due to the intensity of the crash.

Akinbiyi reiterated the importance of obeying road rules and avoiding dangerous driving practices such as wrong-way driving and speeding. He called on commercial transport operators to educate their drivers and maintain safer driving habits. These incidents have reignited conversations about road safety across Nigeria’s urban areas. With accidents continuing to claim lives due to speeding, road misjudgment, and disregard for traffic laws, many are urging for a combination of stricter enforcement and infrastructural improvements to help prevent further loss of life.
