The Division for Research Development (DRD) is tasked with the advancement, facilitation and support of research and postgraduate studies at Stellenbosch University (SU).

The Postgraduate Office

The Postgraduate Office (PGO) promotes postgraduate studies and postgraduate student success and provides professional support services to all (including international) postgraduate students during the postgraduate lifecycle (from application to graduation). The Deputy Director of the PGO (Dep Director: PGO) is a member of the DRD Management Team and is responsible for the strategic management of the postgraduate student funding and well-being portfolio at Stellenbosch University.

Duties:

Policy and system development form part of the incumbent’s responsibilities where these affect postgraduate student funding and the social well-being of postgraduate students.

Through the management of a Postgraduate Student Funding team, the incumbent is responsible for the effective promotion, management and disbursement of funding as per SU’s policies and procedures.

The incumbent is also responsible for establishing opportunities in support of postgraduate well-being, as part of a more holistic approach to postgraduate student support, throughout the postgraduate student lifecycle. The incumbent interacts and builds relationships internally with key departments at SU, including Student Information, Undergraduate Bursaries and Loans,

Student Fees, Information Technology, Information Governance, Admissions, Stellenbosch University International, Development and Alumni Relations, Student Affairs and Faculties. Externally, the incumbent fosters relations with public and private donors and funders and represents SU at relevant fora.

The incumbent:

Leads the management of postgraduate funding;
Exercises effective internal and external stakeholder relationship management;
Practices effective communication, represents the institution and provides input on various fora in line with the funding and well-being portfolio;
Provides line management to designated full-time and ad hoc staff in the Postgraduate Office;
Manages funding budgets and ensures effective financial control of disbursements, expenditures, and reporting.

Required Skills

Candidate Requirements

A postgraduate qualification;
At least five years’ relevant experience in a University environment or a public or private funding agency;
Proven ability to implement and manage business processes, workflows and systems in a pressured environment;
The ability to interpret and implement legislation, regulations, policies and guidelines relevant to the position and to guide the institution accordingly;
A commitment to the provision of excellent service while operating in a cross-cultural environment;
Evidence of proficiency in financial and resource management and preparation of reports for internal and external stakeholders;
Ability to plan and work under pressure and according to externally-driven deadlines;
Proven ability to interact and build sound relationships with individuals from a wide range of professional and non-professional backgrounds, including internal and external clients;
Must be a team player with demonstrable leadership, organisational and people management skills;
Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills;
Ability to use a range of application software in support of carrying out the duties of the position;
Sound awareness of the challenges and opportunities for universities and postgraduate students in the South African Higher Education environment.

Recommendation:

Proficient user of SU’s internal student record and financial systems;
Fundraising experience in Higher Education.
