Big Brother Mzansi 2022

#BBMzansi: Housemates are not real and this is why

Big Brother Mzansi season three is not as good as the previous iterations, mainly because the show does not feel authentic. The housemates do not seem real and appear to be gaming the system. They are too aware of the cameras, making almost everything they do seem too scripted and well planned instead of being their natural selves. Most of the housemates seem to be playing it extremely safe.

It also appears that most of the housemates on Big Brother Mzansi season three entered the house to gain traction for their brands and hustles rather than to compete for the R2 million prize money.

Terry

Take, for example, Terry. The Big Brother Mzansi housemate, real name Gugu Refiloe Bonga, is an adult content creator and makes her money on OnlyFans.

OnlyFans is a social media platform that allows content creators to post content and receive payment directly from their followers or “fans” via subscriptions or one-off tips. Unlike most other social media platforms, OnlyFans has lax policies about the allowed content.

Content creators can post racy revealing photos and even full-on explicit images and videos. This has made the platform a favourite for adult entertainment and s.e.x industry people, who use it to monetize their ‘wares’ and ‘services.’

Terry’s OnlyFans hustle is quite lucrative. The housemate revealed that she made more than R50 000 in just two weeks at one time. Since entering the Big Brother house, Terry has talked about her OnlyFans hustle on many occasions, indirectly pushing and marketing her brand. One may be forgiven for thinking that Terry entered the Big Brother Mzansi house to get more attention for her hustle.

Mphowabadimo (Mpho)

To buttress the point, there is Mphowabadimo (Mpho) as well. Mpho is a Sangoma in real life and also seems to be slyly marketing her outside business. Other housemates seem more interested in getting fame and launching their careers in the media industry after Big Brother Mzansi.

All this makes Big Brother Mzansi feel distinctly underwhelming and inauthentic. One way to avoid this in future, if there is another season of the reality show, is to do better at the casting stage. The reality show producers need to consider casting ordinary people with no agendas to push. They can do this by avoiding social media influencers, radio and television personalities, YouTubers, models, and similar people out to market themselves.
