Northriding residents protest against power outages
Joburg’s Mayor is highlighting poor planning of housing developments as a key reason many residents are subjected to constant power cuts. Angry Randburg residents have blockaded roads with burning tires and debris in protest against constant electricity outages.This after facing power availability challenges for three years with no solutions in sight.Residents blockaded the corner of Hyperion Drive and Witkoppen Road with burning tyres.
The ward councillor, Ralf Bittkau, confirmed to News24 that the power outages were rotational. He said the ongoing protests were in Ward 101. He said five wards had experienced power cuts on Tuesday.
“I agree with the residents that we have a problem, and I am fully in support of the residents, but I am not in support of what they are doing right now. They are facing the brunt of the entire city falling apart. The city is failing left, right and centre,” he said. Bittkau added that angry residents had blamed him, saying he was sleeping on the job.
