Weekend police operation in North West results in 232 arrests

North West police have been on a crime-fighting blitz across the province since Friday, arresting a total of 323 suspects for various crimes.

Of the 323 arrests, 11 suspects were apprehended for serious crimes, including murder, rape, assaults with intent to do grievous bodily harm, common robbery, sexual assault and attempted rape.

The other suspects were nabbed for crimes relating to illegal possession and use of liquor and weapons.

At least 122 people were arrested for liquor-related offences.

Police arrested 13 people for being drunk in public, and another 47 suspects have been charged with illegally selling alcohol.

Authorities also confiscated various goods, including a pistol, a magazine, 987 litres of liquor, a knife and tools.

At least 92 fines were issued, including 29 for contravening the Liquor Act and four for road traffic-related offences during the same operations.

North West police commissioner Lieutenant-General Sello Kwena has welcomed the arrests.

“Police together with other role players will continue with the operations to discourage criminal activities as well as to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book,” said Kwena.
