Legendary singer Nobesuthu Mbadu laid to rest

Legendary mbaqanga musician Nobesuthu Mbadu has been laid to rest.

The 76-year-old, best known for her work with Mahotella Queens, died in hospital on Tuesday, 31 August, from kidney failure.

Speaking on behalf of the family, a tearful Nkululeko Mchunu said Nobesuthu was very happy in her last days.

“It’s very difficult for us to come to terms with her passing. We are devastated because although she was sick, she was still fit and gaining back her weight. I’d like to thank everyone who supported us during this difficult period,” she said.

Mildred Mangxola, a former member of Mahotella Queens, said she’d always cherish their memories.

“I am heartbroken, but comforted that she died knowing the role she played in this life as she was celebrated,” she said.

“She was a hard worker from the beginning. When we started and were not making money, she didn’t miss a performance.”

Speaking on behalf of the Living Legends Fraternity, actress Thembi Mtshali-Jones described Nobesuthu as a national treasure.

“She played a pivotal role in shaping the music industry into what it is today. And I believe as we’re laying her to rest today, there’s a celebration in heaven hosted by other fallen legends to welcome her.”

Hilda Tloubatla, the last remaining member of the group, said she had lost a sister.

“I could speak the whole day about this strong and loving woman. She was like a sister to me, and we were inseparable. I’m going to miss her and the prayer warrior she was.

“She would always encourage us to pray before we went on stage,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa, Dumisani Chabalala said: “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family.”

Nobesuthu was buried at South Park Cemetery in Germiston, Ekurhuleni.
