Paul Mashatile says no politician is special before the law

Deputy President Paul Mashatile said no current or former politician will be shielded from facing the law.
On Thursday, he had to, again, defend President Cyril Ramaphosa against corruption accusations during question time in Parliament.
Answering questions in the National Council of Provinces for the first time since being appointed – Mashatile said Ramaphosa was co-operating with law enforcement and other state agencies in relation to the theft of more than $500,000 from his Phala Phala farm.
Mashatile was questioned by the Democratic Alliance on the speedy prosecutions of high-profile cases in an effort to speed up South Africa’s removal from an international grey list.
The country was greylisted in February for not having adequate measures in place to combat money laundering and financial terrorism.
But Mashatile said law enforcement agencies were carrying out their multi-disciplinary action plan.
“Let’s not interfere. Let’s allow these agencies to do their work. They will do so.”
He said President Cyril Ramaphosa was also co-operating with several investigations in relation to the Phala Phala farm matter.
“There is no one that is special. They must just do their work. So I’m not going to be chasing certain high-profile leaders and so on.”
Mashatile said it’s not the job of the executive to pursue corruption cases.
