NPA says it has taken no-nonsense approach to corruption within criminal justice system

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it has taken a no-nonsense approach to corruption within the criminal justice system.

This follows the sentencing of two police officers to ten years imprisonment each for extorting money from a printing business owner in Rivonia.

It’s understood that Lehlogonolo Tsagane and Jabulani Ngobeni received a tip-off in November 2020 about a suspect branding clothes with the South African Police Service (SAPS) logo.

Instead of arresting the suspects, the pair illegally demanded R1.5 million from the owner but settled for R14,000.

The Specialised Commercial Crime Court sitting in Palm Ridge sentenced Tsagane and Ngobeni on Tuesday and said it deviated from the prescribed minimum sentence of 15 years because the two were first-time offenders.

NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane: “Corruption erodes public confidence in the criminal justice system and that is why as the NPA, working together with our partners within the criminal justice system, we remain resolute in bringing criminals within the system to book.”
