Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says his department is looking at ways to address the rift over e-tolls.
Last week, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni reiterated his stance on the user-pay policy, saying motorists must pay for the roads they use.
But the ANC in Gauteng reiterated its calls for e-tolls to be scrapped.
Mbalula is expected to make pronouncements on the e-tolls in the coming weeks.
“The second week of this month, the cabinet will pronounce and I’ll come back to you and tell you what is the position of the government on this,” he said.
Last week, the minister said the government is considering alternatives to dealing with Gauteng e-tolls.
Mbalula said e-tolls won’t be implemented in terms of the current scheme.
Delivering his medium-term budget, Tito Mboweni said e-tolls will not be scrapped.
“Government has decided to retain the user-pay principle. While there will be a further dispensation and value‐added services, compliance will also be strengthened,” said Mboweni.
He continued to state that not paying for e-tolls has resulted in the deterioration of Gauteng roads and an inability to maintain the network.
