No arrests yet following New Year’s Melville shootings

Mystery still surrounds two separate shooting incidents in Johannesburg in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Police have confirmed no arrests have been made, but say they’re still probing the incident.

Two people were shot dead outside a restaurant in Melville, while six were wounded. One of the Melville shooting victims remains in a critical condition with a bullet wound to the head.

He’s a car guard known as Lerato. His mother attended a memorial service for the victims at the weekend and was proud to hear positive things about her son. Lerato hasn’t been staying with his mother. I would ask him to come home and he would just brush me off and say he is working hard here,” she said.

“I heard some good things around here, saying Lerato was such a humble and respectful guy. On the same night, 11 people were wounded at a party at Mary Fitzgerald Square.

One of the victims says he is haunted by the shooting. “I’m not all right. I keep thinking I almost died,” said Almao Shichongi. The City of Johannesburg says it’s waiting for the recommendations of the ongoing investigation.
