NMB mayor calls for the reversal of Port Elizabeth’s new name

Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Nqaba Bhanga has called for the reversal of the new name given to Port Elizabeth.

Bhanga recently wrote to the Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa over the renaming of Port Elizabeth to Gqeberha.

Bhanga says he is not against the name change, but against the processes that were followed to reach this decision.

“One of the reasons that we are raising this issue is because technically the consultation was a desktop communication attended by a few numbers of people, which reflects lack of commitment.

“In this case, the handbook requirements for consultations do not embrace democracy, the essence of democracy we have established that government is for the people and by the people for the people,” he said.

“The arrogance of those who claim processes, where followed, is their failure to understand what participation is which goes together with convening meetings with people on the ground.”
