President Cyril Ramaphosa says a new tide is upon South Africa that must be welcomed with optimism and hope.
Taking his oath of office as president for a second term at the Union Buildings on Wednesday, he vowed to be a president for all South Africans.
In his inaugural address, Ramaphosa said now is the time for South Africans to work together.
The president recommitted himself to lead the country in an unprecedented moment.
He said the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) is a moment of profound significance and the beginning of a new era.
“These parties have agreed to work in partnership to employ their talents for the good of the country and the progress of the people of South Africa.”
He challenged South Africans to draw on every strength to turn dreams into reality.
“We must be brave and we must be bold. This is a new tide that heralds progress, transformation and deep fundamental change.”
Ramaphosa said it would take extraordinary courage for political leaders to work together to achieve the change South Africans want to see.
