KZN government to relocate flood victims to new shelters

The KwaZulu-Natal government has purchased a block of flats to house Durban communities affected by heavy rains that are lashing the province.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says this is the disaster relief model they’ll rely on in future.

In April, deadly floods claimed 400 lives, displaced tens of thousands more, and racked up damages estimated at R25-billion.

“Well we have this model now and we have seen that it works for us. Moving forward as government we have also bought one building which used to be owned by Transnet and that building is being prepared,” she said.

“We have cleaned the building, it’s being prepared. We would know that in future, people that need to be relocated at least we do have buildings readily available for us to relocate those people.”

Meanwhile, KZN Cooperative Governance MEC Sihle Zikalala assured residents that emergency measures are in place should rain cause any harm or damage at the weekend.

The SA Weather Service has warned that the province will experience heavy rains in the coming days.
