Mangaung fails to elect new mayor

Mangaung remains without a mayor after Thursday’s council meeting was postponed at the eleventh hour.

The ANC in the Free State recalled the mayor in January because it feels the metro needs new leadership.

The Democratic Alliance’s Maryke Davies, who was elected Speaker in an ANC-dominated council on Wednesday, says she postponed the meeting following threats of violence.

This as ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula threatens expulsion for councillors who vote to elect Davies.
