Netflix to Make Cloud Gaming Part of it’s Service

Netflix appears to be looking into it. According to protocol, Netflix is looking to expand its games offerings with a focus on cloud gaming, as several recent job adverts have listed “cloud gaming” experience as a requirement. Notably, a job listing for a Rendering Engineer spells out Netflix’s interest in cloud gaming.

“In this role, you will help optimize the rendering of games so we can render multiple games on our cloud gaming appliances,” it reads. “You will also assist with the development of SDKs to enable game developers to succeed in writing high-quality games for the Netflix cloud games ecosystem.
There you have it – the Netflix cloud games ecosystem. Of course, Netflix is notionally in a good position to offer cloud-based gaming, with years of online streaming expertise making cloud-based anything an obvious choice.

However, to date, Netflix has dabbled with games, currently offering a small selection of mobile games as the company’s sole gaming output. The majority of those were acquired from other studios, but Netflix’s Stranger Things game does stand out as a neat example of what they can offer internally.

Netflix has always had big ambitions for its gaming service, saying back in 2021 that it wanted to create “the absolute best gaming service in the industry.” Unfortunately, that news hasn’t travelled as far as its subscribers, with only 1% of them playing Netflix games. Not exactly huge numbers, but then, the service isn’t exactly packed full of AAA titles. Yet.

The company is hoping to expand its catalogue by the end of the year to make 50 games available on the Netflix service. That doesn’t include its apparent first steps into cloud gaming.

Other job listings include a Security Product Manager that should have “experience with cloud gaming challenges, threat vectors, infrastructure, and client requirements”. There are also a bunch of other job listings asking for “experience building games for early or unfinished platforms.” Netflix Cloud Gaming certainly fits the bill on that front.
