National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula declines request for investigation

National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has declined requests to initiate parliamentary action over allegations against President Cyril Ramaphosa. The UDM and the African Transformation Movement called for an investigation into the President’s conduct with regard to the Phala Phala farm theft saga.

They also called for him to be placed on sabbatical. The ATM requested the establishment of a Section 89 committee for a removal inquiry.

Mapisa-Nqakula turned down the request as there is no legal basis for Parliament to compel the President to take leave. She says the request did not constitute nor was it accompanied by a substantive motion as required by the Rules.
