Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille said she is relieved the DA has dropped all internal charges against her.
De Lille will step down at the end of October from her position as the executive mayor of Cape Town.
She said her drawn-out fight with the party has been about principle, and not a position.
“My main fight was to clear up my name. Once the DA approached me and offered to withdraw the charges, I was satisfied that my name would now be cleared.
“I decided to step aside so I could get on with my life,” she said.
“I could no longer stand the abuse from some members of the DA because I took this position in the first place to make a real and meaningful difference in the lives of the people of the city.”
De Lille has denied that a secret deal existed between her and the party. She repeatedly iterated that she stands nothing to gain from her decision.
She said she is undecided about what she will do in the future, but remains committed to serving the people of South Africa.
